Shake the Dust from your Sandals

Many congregations within the ELCA are prayerfully discerning where the Lord is leading them. Many of those traditional congregations are struggling with the direction that the ELCA is heading and many believe that they are leaving our Lord behind. The things of this world seem to be held in a much higher regard than our Lord, and the “J” word has little to do with Jesus. God’s work, our hands, is proudly proclaimed as “Our Brand” by the ELCA. Unfortunately, there is little emphasis on reaching out to our brothers and sisters who do not know Jesus. Good works and the acknowledgement of those doing them are nothing without declaring that we do these things in Jesus’ name. The ELCA introduces false doctrine and disregards God’s law in order to more welcoming, accepting and tolerant. God’s Word is amended by Biblical scholars and passed by the votes of His children, using their imperfect love in the name of God’s perfect love. When do children’s opinions take precedence over their Father in heaven?

Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus said, “If a brother or sister sins, go and point out the fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” Jesus teaches that we should try to correct our brother or sister, but if they continue to refuse to listen, we are to treat them as a pagan or tax collector. Tax collectors, for one, were reviled in Jesus’ time, since they were typically dishonest and considered traitors. Our Lord introduces, in this teaching, that those that fail to respond to the church’s discipline should be excommunicated. Further, in 2 Thessalonians 3:14, “Take special note of those who do not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard them as enemies, but warn them as fellow believers.” These verses are meant that the disassociation with the believers in error, will cause them to realize their error and come back to the Lord. This is not meant to be a punishment, but an avenue to repair the fellowship with those in error. In regards to disassociation with the ELCA, there have been fellow believers that have tried over and over to lead the ELCA back to the Lord and the ELCA continues to pursue this path of promoting a false gospel. Would it not be appropriate in Christian love to turn away, hoping that this will awaken the ELCA and bring them back to the Lord?

1 Corinthians 9-11, “I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people – not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy or swindlers, or idolators. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with any who claim to be fellow believers but are sexually immoral, or greedy, idolators, or slanderers, drunkards, or swindlers. With such persons do not even eat.” In these verses Paul refers to those affiliated with the church that are engaging in immoral conduct. Calling oneself a Christian while leading an immoral life is reprehensible and by doing so they give false testimony to Christ. If Christians associate with other Christians that continue to disregard God’s law by engaging in immoral conduct, non-believers will see this and assume that this is the proper way for a Christian to conduct himself, dishonoring the name of our Lord. Does not the ELCA promote immorality by condoning the homosexual lifestyle? Is placing the social justice agenda above our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ tantamount to idolatry? When the leaders of the ELCA complain openly about the loss of revenue, causing reductions in staffing and compensation, does that not fit the definition of greed? When we are told that we don’t need to turn the hearts of non-believers to Jesus and all are saved regardless of their faith in the risen Christ, we truly need to pray about our continued affiliation with this Synod. We need to continue to prayerfully discern where God is leading. We need to dwell in His Word and let His will be done. If enough of God’s children turn their backs on the ELCA, it may just be enough to open their hearts and bring them back to the Lord. If SOTH decides to remain with the ELCA as it continues on this path, we will not only be guilty by association, but we may be just as well be guilty of dishonoring our Lord.

So, Why Haven't We Left SOTH Yet?

Even though Sandy and I felt that the Lord was leading us away from SOTH, we felt obligated to be present and available for any questions at the constitutional amendment proposal question and answer sessions, special, and annual meetings. During these Q & A sessions something unexpected happened. A door that had been previously closed had begun to reopen, ever so slightly. The path to an alternative to the ELCA had again become an option.

In the December 27th meeting, we discovered that, although the possibility of affiliating with a synod other than the ELCA existed, no equitable alternative was forthcoming. Pastor said that the current alternatives seemed to be populated by bickering factions and that being part of one of these negative organizations was just not acceptable. Pastor also said he felt called to be a faithful witness within the ELCA.

Then on January 3rd, it was recommended that SOTH continue researching the current alternatives of Lutheran Core and LCMC, since both are in the early stages of creating more structured, synod type organizations. Pastor also agreed that SOTH could consider joining one of these organizations, while remaining in the ELCA and allowing him to remain a rostered ELCA pastor. SOTH currently belongs to the Willow Creek Association, which is a conservative group of churches that are well grounded in Scripture. Sometimes the Holy Spirit moves in ways that are inexplicable. Because a valid opportunity is open again to assist SOTH to move forward and search for a synod that truly embraces the Gospel, we realize that the Lord does have a plan for us at SOTH, at the very least for us to help lead in this regard.

I plan to maintain this blog and post information regarding the progress of the synodical relations task force and to additionally pass on information about Lutheran Core, LCMC and any other alternatives to the ELCA. Please add your comments to the blog so as to keep the lines of communication open and to encourage others to participate and share their thoughts and concerns.

Most of all, I want to emphasize how important it is that we have a quorum present to vote on the constitutional amendments on January 17th. Without a quorum, we will be forced to postpone voting on the amendments until January of 2011. This could mean that SOTH may not be able to protect itself from the ELCA's new policies. The ELCA will put into force the resolutions that were passed in August 2009, and it will likely become more difficult to change our constitution to reflect SOTH's beliefs. Make certain that you plan on attending after the 10:30 service that day and bring at least one other voting member with you. The ratification vote for the constitution is at the annual meeting on January 31st. Please plan on attending this important meeting. Email reminders will be sent to all SOTH members on our mailing list.

For those of you were not able to attend the Q & A sessions, the following is a brief recap.

Regarding the constitution, a few clerical typos were found and corrected and the council will attend to those at their January 12th meeting. If ratified, we will be in a holding pattern waiting for the ELCA Greater Milwaukee Synod's review and reaction to the amendments.

A number of questions were posed regarding the ELCA. Pastor said that he cannot see himself personally leaving the ELCA in 2010. SOTH could consider affiliations with LCMC or Lutheran Core while Pastor remains rostered in the ELCA. It was recommended that SOTH continue to investigate alternatives to ELCA and that the Synodical Relations Committee increase in size and scope. More emphasis will be placed on informing the congregation and formulating a plan of action. We learned that currently, SOTH uses very little literature from the ELCA. All Sunday School and confirmation materials are either obtained from other sources or compiled by staff. SOTH is listed in the phone book as Lutheran, our affiliation with the ELCA is not on our sign and although it is stated on our website, it is not on our home page. It appears that those attending the meeting all agreed that Pastor teaches the true Gospel and that the ELCA promotes a false doctrine, and that the ELCA's position is unacceptable, or at least very troubling for many congregants. Comments were made that there is a stigma attached to belonging to the ELCA and that members of SOTH are considered guilty by association.

Beginning in February, Pastor, members of the task force, and council will meet with SOTH small groups for more Q & A sessions, looking to ascertain the pulse of the congregation. More informational meetings will be scheduled. I would encourage all members of SOTH to attend.

Why Leave the ELCA part II

I have read many opinions as to why it makes sense to stay the course in the ELCA and try to make a difference. Explanations to stay include, being a faithful witness within the ELCA, hoping to be part of a revival of the ELCA, and to reach out to bear the cross for those lost in the ELCA.

Well, here are a host of reasons to consider leaving the ELCA.

1. The ELCA expected to lose as many as 1 million of their 5 million membership when they passed their far reaching social agenda in August. If more congregations than expected remain, they will have given the ELCA confirmation that they are on the right path and will only accelerate their implementation of more social justice agendas.

2. The continuation of the ELCA in its present form will allow more pastors to be trained in the false gospel and allow them to reach more congregations, putting more Christians at risk.

3. If a greater number of congregations prepare to leave, perhaps the ELCA will reconsider their path. If these actions fail to elicit a proper response from the ELCA, then the congregations that leave will not be at risk of the false doctrine that has overtaken the ELCA. Galations 1:9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

4. As more Christians reject the false gospel and prepare to leave the ELCA more will encouraged to do the same. There is strength in numbers and although it is a difficult task to leave the ELCA, a more vibrant reform movement will bring more Lutherans to the true Gospel.

5. More congregations leaving to join reform movements such as Lutheran Core or LCMC will bring more offerings to be used to support missions that may lose the support of the ELCA, due to their strong rebuke of the actions of the ELCA assembly in August.

6. 2 Peter 2:18 "For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error." This verse teaches us that false doctrines may use words that sound impressive, but in reality have nothing to offer and that the purveyors of false doctrine will prey on new converts, who have not yet had a chance to develop spiritual resistance. This is how the ELCA uses their broad ranging social justice agenda to draw people in, but have no desire to lead them to the true Gospel of Christ.

7. Bound conscience is a foot in the door to place man's corrupt opinions and desires above Scripture. Bound conscience is not just a slippery slope toward placing man's law above God's law, it is a full fledged race to make the modern, enlightened man his own god.

8. Making confession of sin and absolution optional and replacing it with a celebration of baptism. 1 John 1:8-10 "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we ask for forgiveness, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive us all our sins. If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His word has no place in our lives." That Jesus took all of our sins to the cross and died so that we may live is not optional in our faith. Without His death and resurrection, we may as well belong to a social club if we intend to remain in the ELCA.

This is how the ELCA is perverting the Lutheran Church. Put the social justice agenda first and foremost with God running a distant third. The ELCA is in the process of eliminating all sin by simply passing resolutions setting aside Scripture. The ELCA is highjacking the Lutheran Church and leading it to ruin. Those that have tried to save the ELCA have been shoved to the side of the road while it is full speed ahead with a liberal, left wing social agenda with no regard to the saving of the souls of its members. We must shun this false doctrine. We must leave the ELCA behind and pray that all true believers follow and form a new synod to teach the true Gospel.

Titus 1:11-14 "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope-the glorius appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good." Even as we leave, we need to keep our brothers and sisters that remain in the ELCA in our prayers. It is imperative that we continue to support them in prayer and that God gives them the strength to cling to the true Gospel.

Why we are leaving SOTH and the ELCA

When our pastor was asked if he would rule out ever leaving the ELCA,(Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) he responded by saying that of course he could not rule out ever leaving the ELCA. He further qualified his answer by stating that, if a "middle of the road" synod that was true to the Bible would emerge, he would consider a move at that time. What he did not say speaks volumes. All of the churches that have split from the ELCA and created new church bodies and those that are currently in the early formitive stages are all "conservative", thereby not meeting his criteria for consideration.

In fact, "middle of the road" or moderate Lutherans are why the ELCA faces its current crisis. Moderates that abandoned their principals and discarded their beliefs to "form a consensus" is exactly how the ELCA has entered this slippery slope of rejecting our core beliefs. In a effort to be more accommodating and welcoming to the LGTB (Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual) interest groups, the ELCA has formulated a way around Scripture. By inventing "bound conscience" the ELCA has opened a "Pandora's Box" to circumvent God's word, making it unacceptable to simply receive LGTB persons as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, but forces members to accept their behavior as no longer sinful in God's eyes.

This "bound conscience" will also allow for opportunities to circumvent God's will in other matters that may not follow the modern and enlightened social standards of today, but that are specifically addressed in Scripture. The Bible is God's word, without error and true in its entirety, even as it pertains to those modern, more enlightened "middle of the road" Lutherans of today.

Shepherd of the Hills belongs to the ELCA denomination, because as a member, the ELCA has the responsibility to articulate our identity, help us maintain integrity and accountability, for shared ministry and mission, and to provide approved pastors. In regards to integrity and accountability, the ELCA is charged to maintain standards for its church members to follow. The ELCA is to safeguard our church's doctrine, that which we believe and profess. They are to enforce discipline against those that teach false doctrine and to guard the historic and orthodox Christian faith. The ELCA has betrayed it own incorporating documents and historic teaching. The ELCA does not enforce discipline against heresy, the ELCA promotes and embraces heretical teaching. The ELCA is no longer accountable to the majority of its members or the word of God and therefore lacks any integrity to remain a valid denomination of the Lutheran Church Body.

Our pastor taught us that "bound conscience" is not grounded in Scripture, but in personal convictions that are raised up above God's word. The ELCA believes and teaches their seminary students, that the Bible is a book of faith, written by mortals, and although inspired by the Holy Spirit, was written for the people of that time and not always pertinent to today's society. If a person has experience that they truly feel contradicts Scripture, then they can set aside Scripture and use their own personal opinion as authority. This does not properly represent our identities as Lutherans nor does it promote true Christian beliefs.

Sandy and I have tried to be faithful servants to the Lord and have worked to investigate alternatives to the false doctrine that has infiltrated the ELCA. As Lutherans and devoted Christians, we cannot be allied with a synod that disregards Scripture and votes to declare God's word invalid. At SOTH our pastor continues to preach and teach the true Gospel. He is well grounded in traditional orthodox Lutheran doctrine. As long as he continues as the spiritual leader of SOTH, the true Gospel will be promoted. If and when the Spirit calls him to another ministry, SOTH will be at the mercy of the ELCA.

As long as leaving the ELCA remained an option, no matter how slight the chance may be or how long it may take, we were determined to continue to do God's work at SOTH. Now that it is clear that leaving is no longer an option, we have no choice but to leave. It is with a heavy heart that we will be leaving the people we love at SOTH, but sometimes when the Lord closes one door, another is opened with new opportunities to serve him.

We will continue to pray that our family at SOTH continues to grow in the Lord and that God will protect you from the sinful path that the ELCA is taking. We pray that the hearts and minds of all are opened and that the ELCA will turn back to God. Failing that, our prayer is that God leads SOTH to a new church body grounded in the true Spirit.

Yours in Christ,

Don and Sandy Kriefall
